Oak Bowl With Jersey Sand & Liberation Penny

I was commissioned to make this piece for an individual who was leaving the island.

I started by creating the oak base, once the desired shape was created I then cut the groove into the edge of the bowl as well as the void to the centre for the coin to fit into. Once the groove was cut I then mixed the resin with a mixture of sands from various Jersey beaches and poured it into the groove.

Simultaneously I hand polished the coin as this gives a much nicer finish than using a polishing mop, this was then fully cleaned to remove any surplus chemicals that could react with the resin. This was then topped off with clear resin.

The dish was then re-cut with a carbide cutter to make the surface smooth and uniform, I forgot that sand was essentially tiny pieces of rock so I destroyed a couple of cutters in the process but it was worth it for the end result.

I am so happy with the way this commission turned out as did the end recipient who was overcome with emotion that they are able to take a piece of the island they love with them on the newest chapter of their life.
